Against the Odds by V.B. Tenery & David Arp ~ showcase and author interview

Against the Odds_ACTION-ADVENTURE, ROMANTIC SUSPENSE, TERRORISM, WAR

It’s something I haven’t done yet and something that intrigues me — when two authors collaborate on a work of fiction. In this case, AGAINST THE ODDS was written by two colleagues I’ve know for several years. So, I thought I’d ask them about it.

A little about the novel…

Agent Sam Roberts took nano seconds to figure out how and why the missionary woman got on the yacht. The scum-bucket Russian he was assigned to watch duped her somehow, like that miserable criminal had others. Turning a blind eye to save his job might guarantee her an early visit from the Grim Reaper. Then again, a rescue attempt through middle east terrain might have the same results. His choice is a story ready to keep any reader turning pages long into the night.”

It was the mother of all bad days. — The date, September 11, 2012. The place, Benghazi, Libya. While a brave band of warrior’s fight for their lives in the consulate and CIA annex, outside, a Mossad Agent, a missionary, and a Mississippi giant fight a different battle. Caught between terrorists and an enraged Russian arms dealer, they must complete the mission and manage to stay alive until they can escape or the cavalry arrives. Never assume things can’t get worse.

INTERVIEW:

Nike: What was it like to write with a co-author?

Dave Arp Alaska 2011

Dave in Alaska

Dave:  Co-writing makes you think, or at least it made me think more than if I were writing alone. AGAINST THE ODDS was Virginia’s idea, and she wrote the first two chapters and sent them to me. I had to introduce my character and tie him to hers. I/we never knew where the other was taking the story. Sometimes the next scene jumped into my head and away I went. Sometimes I thought “What!”

V. B. Tenery

VB: When I decide to write a story set in Libya, I asked David if he would like to join the project since he has an extensive background in the Middle East. Thus, the character of Tree was added to the story. Co-authoring was different, but in a good way. Our writing styles are similar so the chapters blended together seamlessly. Dave (The Great White Hunter) Arp was sometimes incommunicado tracking bears across the Alaskan tundra or working in the Gulf on an oil rig and would find chapters and emails from me in his inbox to wade through. All in all, it was a fun experience.

Nike:  Tell us something topical, interesting, funny, or something we would not expect about the writing of this novel.

David: Tree’s name and physical characteristics came from two men I worked with in Saudi Arabia. Getting a character from Mississippi into Libya isn’t hard if he’s working for a drilling contractor and his mom is Tunisian.

VB: Molly the dog, in the story, is real. Her characteristics as described in the             novel are exclusively her own. She doesn’t like anyone but me, but will tolerate a few others. She is a rescue dog my daughter purchased. Molly’s original owner was an older woman so Molly adopted me. I call her my little Rottweiler. My office is in my bedroom and she lives under my bed except when the weather is nice. Anyone who dares venture into her space is greeted by Molly in attack mode. She is the fastest dog I’ve ever seen. When I put her outside, she shoots out the door like she was fired from a gun. I went from a big, lovable, gentle St. Bernard, to an unfriendly, grouchy, hyper, midget with an attitude. What are you going to do when you’re adopted?

5-Star Review for DEADLY DESIGNS ~ by author Carole Brown, on Amazon

Customer Review

Chillemi’s Deadly Designs is one of the best crime fiction novels for today’s world, October 14, 2016

By  C. Brown

This review is from: Deadly Designs: The Veronica “Ronnie” Ingels/Dawson Hughes Trilogy, Book Two (Authorized Operations) (Kindle Edition)

Chillemi’s Deadly Designs is one of the best crime fiction novels for today’s world. Filled with tension and fast-paced action, the book also brings out the romance between the protagonists and both the suspense and romance are handled as an experienced, great writing author should do–realistically and attention-grabbing.

Ronnie Ingels teams up with Lt Dawson Hughes to find the missing wife and daughter of nerdy radio DJ Harper, even though reported far later than they should have been. Fear for the missing mother and daughter is building when the double protagonists go from questioning the elite society of Connecticut and grouchy local police detectives to an underworld of fashion and terrorism.

One impressive ability that shines from Chillemi’s writing, is her ability to infuse faith and inspirational moments within her plots that are realistic and encouraging to readers, and far from overwhelming.

The question is: did the model/mother take off on one of her usual pot-smoking experiences with a shady “friend,” or did the international terrorists kidnap the two as pay back for the DJ’s pro-Israel, conspiracy theory he spouted on a regular broadcast? Is the husband at fault? And can Ronnie and Dawson rescue the family before it’s too late?

Time is ticking…and everyone knows time is a factor in finding a live child. Recommended highly!

Sunday Morning in My Neighborhood ~ far away from the bombing in my former hometown

img_2118

Walking Sophie, my gal pal, on this misty Sunday morning in NE Florida is quiet and relaxing. I took a few photos and couldn’t help contrasting this bucolic scene with what was going on in my former hometown, NYC, after last night’s street bombing. Thirty people were injured.

img_2111

If Sophie and I walk to the right when we leave the house. No place to hide a pressure-cooker bomb with a note and a cell phone.

img_2112

If Sophie and I walk to the left. At the end of this street there is a rooster crowing.

img_2114

Instead we chose to walk straight ahead where this tree had a major branch come down a week before Hurricane Hermine. We do get tropical storms with high winds.

My heart and prayers are with New Yorkers and also the people of Seaside, NJ who also had a bombing last night that thankfully failed to go off during the Marine Corps race. I know this is so scary, yet I also know the people of NYC and New Jersey are strong and will fight back against any type of terrorism.

DEADLY DESIGNS ~ back to school promotion, 99 cents

dd-meme-3

The kids are back in school, so kick back and enjoy a taut, suspenseful detective novel ~ Friday, September 9th – Sunday, September 11th only 99 cents.

DEADLY DESIGNS: Fast paced whodunit, with dry humor. Sweet, romance, warm intimacy, sophisticated themes presented tastefully.  Private investigator Veronica “Ronnie” Ingels teams up with Deputy Dawson Hughes to find a geeky radio broadcaster’s missing wife and young daughter. They fear the woman and child were taken by Islamic terrorists as revenge against the husband’s pro-Israel, conspiracy theory broadcasts. The investigation takes Ronnie and Hughes from a manicured Connecticut estate, to interviews with an elitist A-List society crowd, and run-ins with cranky local police detectives. Then they plunge deep into the seamy, drug-riddled underbelly of the fashion world, with the specter of international terrorism hovering.

Hughes has recently been promoted to lieutenant in the Taylor County, Texas Sheriff’s Department. He’s on leave on a special assignment with Authorized Operations (AO), a clandestine, quasi-government agency operating out of a sea-side mansion in Hither Hills, NY. The only thing is, many powerful politicians, and government big-wigs claim Authorized Operations doesn’t exist.

Ronnie is furious at both Hughes and the broadcaster for waiting thirty-six hours to start the search. She knows the longer it takes, the less chance there is of finding the child alive. The problem is, radio talk-show host Ed Harper has been hoping-against-hope that his pot-smoking, model wife is on one of her ‘esoteric experiences’ and has simply taken the child while she romps for a few days. He doesn’t want to seriously consider the other, more hazardous possibility… that his radio broadcasts have angered some very dangerous people.

 ENDORSEMENTS:

While I thoroughly enjoyed, HARMFUL INTENT, I found DEADLY DESIGN’s captivating plot and familiar characters fascinating. It’s so refreshing to read a good suspense novel without all the darkness but that is still exciting. Amid the turmoil, Ronnie and Dawson ease into a romance that is fresh and utterly real. I highly recommend DEADLY DESIGN. It’s a stellar read. ~~ V. B. Tenery, author of WORKS OF DARKNESS, book one in the Matt Foley/Sara Bradford series.

…as Hughes and Ronnie come under threats to their lives, the author constructs a narrative of increasing tension that builds to an exciting climax and satisfying denouement. The author also presents a meticulously researched variety of technical equipment. The result is an excellent suspense novel that readers will find most entertaining. ~~ Don Taylor, author of LIGHTNING ON A QUIET NIGHT, THE LAZARUS FILE, and more.

In DEADLY DESIGNS, Dawson Hughes brings his Texas charm to the Tri-State area to work with Ronnie on an abduction case. This gritty, suspense-filled story will keep the reader on edge all the way up until the satisfying end. I especially enjoyed the blossoming affection between the two detectives. Highly recommended! ~~ Betty Thomason Owens, author of ANNABELLE’S RUTH, Book 1 in the Kinsman Redeemer series.

Critics Have Said:

Who’d a thunk it? Nike Chillemi’s New York gusto in Texas. HARMFUL INTENT is a mystery/suspense delight, mixing Nike’s New York flavor, the quirkiness of the South, a mystery to die for, and laugh aloud humor. I couldn’t put it down. ~ Fay Lamb, author of STALKING WILLOW and BETTER THAN REVENGE.

Nike Chillemi delivers another gritty ‘who dun it’ in her signature no nonsense style, with just the right amount of humor to lighten it up on occasion while keeping it real.  Tracy Krauss – award winning and bestselling author of numerous novels including WIND OVER MARSHDALE

Echoing the best pulp fiction of generations past, Chillemi’s new contemporary series will please readers of romantic suspense. DIAMONDS ARE FOR EDEN by Felicia Mires ~ a review

Diamonds Are For Eden

The author thrusts the reader into a whirlwind of spies and assassins, all the while delivering a well written romantc suspense novel. Personally, I like my terrorists horrific and frightening as all get out, while the hero and heroine and totally focused on and consumed by the chase. That’s simply my espionage thriller preference and doesn’t at all detract from this writer’s ability to deliver a suspenseful romance.

Natasha Kelly owns a courier service for museums with her African born brother Katir, adopted by her parents when they were missionairies. She has been engaged by the Mossad, Israel’s spy organization, to transport uncut diamonds from South Africa to Israel. However, terrorists are trying to stop all diamond shipments from reaching Israel. Natasha not only has to get the diamonds to Israel, she also has to find out who the terrorists, are and why they’ve targeted South African diamonds.

Brithis screen heartthrob Dirk Sloan happens to sit across the aisle from Natasha on her flight to South Africa. He is also staying at her hotel, and appears out of nowhere to stop an attack upon her in a dark alleyway. At that point he gives her a kiss and she has to wonder if he’s playing foot-loose-and-fancy-free with her. She’s beginning to have an attraction to him she is fighting. He seems to be able to find her at any moment. He could be working with the terrorists seeking to stop her.

David Benjamin, career Mossad agent, has feelings for Natasha. So does Dirk Sloan, and there you have the classic romance novel love-triangle. Natasha is attacked in the middle of the night at a Mossad camp in the desert. The upshot is the two men take turns sleeping on her couch to protect her. Later Natasha and Dirk travel by camel to a desert Christian abbey where they must rescue monks who have been taken hostage by the same  terrorists who have been intercepting the diamonds. This romantic suspense novel has twists and turns, action, plenty of sizzle, with a deep faith element. The story continues in the next novel of the series.
