GLAMOROUS ~ the writer’s life, not

hand held ac

When a/c’s on the fritz.

The drainage system of my central air conditioning system needs to be flushed. Hey, this is Florida people! This is a big deal.

Today threatens to be a hot one. Hotter than Hades. So, until the a/c repair person arrives, (I don’t know if it will be a man, so I’m going gender neutral) I’m giving my a/c system a break. Water is accumulating in the metal pan beneath the system. If too much water accumulates, it will spill over and begin to create water damage in the house I rent. But before that happens, this unit has a shut off switch and will shut itself off. My fear is it will NOT turn itself back on after some water has evaporated. That would leave me with no relief at all from what threaten to be scorching temps this afternoon. So, I raised my thermostat and in effect turned the unit off to let some water evaporate. Then if the said repair person doesn’t get here today, after some water has evaporated, I can turn it back on during the hottest part of the day. Remember, this is Florida and the temps are brutal right now…and he/she probably has a long, long client call list today.

So,, here’s the glamour part…don’t want you to miss that!!! I’m sitting before my laptop in my coolest, cotton, shortie PJs with my window’s open to catch the small breeze out there, a fan is blowing on me, and I’m sweating some while typing this out. Of course you can see the glamour in that. Why, it’s akin to Hemingway’s involvement in the Spanish Civil War. No? Not quite? Not close? Well, anyway, I do need a hand-held A/C system right now.

BAT CRAZY by Carole Brown ~ a new release

Bat Crazy

A new release that’s a play on words…what fun.

Nike: I absolutely love the title BAT CRAZY. How did you come up with it? It seems as if it’s a pun. Is that intended?

Carole: Lol. Yes, it is, Nikki! When I first (way back!) began with this series–although I didn’t know it would be a series at the time–I wrote Hog Insane as a short story about a couple. The woman was an adventurous type and dreamed of riding a Harley Hog; the man was kind of a stick-in-the-mud type with no adventure bones holding his self together.

Anyhow, that’s the beginning. From there, I decided to play on the word “insane” with each book’s title having an “insane” word in it.

  • Hog Insane, the hog being a Harley bike.
  • Bat Crazy, bat being bats, particularly an Australian bat that is huge!
  • The third book will be titled Daffy’s Duck: this one is kind of two-fold. Daffy being used to go w/the “insane” word and also being the name (Daffodil/Daffy) of a main character in the book.
  • Mad Dog, Horse Senseless, Touched Kitty, etc. until I run out of words.

Nike: Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

Carole: Denton Davies is kind of a laid back character in some ways, yet he’s not afraid to push himself/his investigation/questions out there if he thinks it’s needed. He’s a word fanatic, loves fishing, his dog, Taffy, and his wife Alex. He’s like most amateur detectives in that he can sense and figure out things quite well. He tries to hide deep feelings, and worries a bit too much for Alex’s more outward personality.

Nike: After you’ve got word count and/or marketing done for the day, tended to your job and/or family, how do you find “you time” to relax?

Carole: Love being with my family and any time I can sneak in time with my grandsons is time I count as a blessing. My husband and I always try to spend a little time together in the evenings, we love going to a few select places, traveling, and camping, soaking in the hot tub at home, gardening, photography, reading or just casual talking without any stressful subjects filtering in. I also putter with my scrapbooks, write in journals–both as the mood hits me. I’m contemplating making a quilt from my mother’s clothes, but since I’ve never, ever in my life made one, I’m hesitating. ~~ Probably for good reason. LoL

What’s this novel all about…

Monster Bats with red eyes that attack humans?

Denton doesn’t think so and Alex hopes not, but who are they to quibble with the local gossip?
Transmission problems and a blown tire land Denton and Alex Davies right in the middle of a dilapidated, unfriendly town that’s welcoming no strangers, least of all nosy ones with a bent toward solving mysteries.

But with support from the town detective–an admirer of the Davies–and their own tenacious personalities, Denton and Alex aren’t easily scared off. Not when warnings in the form of painted bats show up on the porch of their rented cabin, not when the mayor threatens to run them out of town and not even when Denton finds the bones . . .

An ancient story, a bit of a map, a lost jewel and even a bat clan serve to provide the Davies and their sidekick, Taffy, the dog, their hardest case so far.

A No Nonsense Female PI ~ still funny as all get out

Harmful Intent, Framed

HARMFUL INTENT, the first in the Veronica “Ronnie” Ingels/Dawson Hughes mystery series, is action packed, yet delivers laughs. Ronnie faces more than a few nasty types and encounters as much violence as any crime fiction main character worth his or her salt.

Whereas Janet Evonovich’s character Stephanie Plum isn’t the bravest operative on the street, Ronnie is not only tough, she’s competent…is armed to the teeth and is an excellent shot. Like Stephanie Plum, Ronnie is hilarious.

Isablle Lucas

One reader suggested Transformers’ Isabelle Lucas would make a terrific Ronnie Ingles should it ever be made into a movie.

Fun facts about Ronnie Ingles:

  • She was born and bred in Brooklyn (NYC) and her parents divorced when she was a teenager. The loss of her father has impacted her ability to chose men wisely.
  • She works for the irascible Jack Cooney at Cooney Investigations.
  • Taylor County Deputy Sheriff Dawson Hughes sets his steel gray eyes on her as he thinks she might’ve killed her cheating husband.

Feet Don’t Fail Me Now ~ on the viral dry skin remedy

IMG_1079I’m reading Lisa Lickel’s marketing article on Elaine Stock’s blog…good stuff. All the while my feet are in a tub of that Listerine/vinegar mixture that’s gone viral for sloughing off dry skin.

I’m sure anyone with a dry skin issue on their feet is aware of the claims of the Listerine/vinegar treatment.

You mix 1/4 C Listerine (most prefer the blue, cool-mint), 1/4 C white vinegar, and 1/2 C warm water. Soak feet for 10 minutes and they claim the dry skin will slough right off in your hand.

I have such dry skin due to a thyroid condition (that is being treated), you’d think I had golumphing golumpha’s disorder on my feet. I bought the cool-mint, blue Listerine (on sale) a month ago. Then I read a dermatologist’s article sort of pooh-poohing this home-remedy, so I put off trying it.

Today when my feet took the plunge, I doubled the recipe. That’s just me. I wanted my feet sloshing around in a little bit more liquid. The cool liquid feels great! Refreshing. I guess that’s why everyone says go with the blue Listerine. As to the results…the dry skin doesn’t just slough off. However, this is the best remedy I’ve tried yet…and I’ve tried both prescription and non-prescription ointments and salves, some with fruit acids. This took off more dead skin, by far, than any of those. This is just my results. I’m not a medical doctor, not a podiatrist, nor a dermatologist, and I’m not prescribing. I’m a writer and I’m recording.

IMG_1080As I said, the dry skin doesn’t simply slough off. I used the two instruments of torture to the left to gently remove dead skin.

My best estimate is, I’m going to be doing thins once a month to keep things in tootsie-ville down to a dull roar.

HARMFUL INTENT ~ I’m Now Officially an Indie Author

Harmful Intent, Lg

It’s been quite a ride. Exhilarating as well as frustrating. Who would ever have thought I’d turn into such a fuss-budget and a ninny. I worried over every little thing, at least three times. Drove a few friends stark raving mad with incessant “newbie”questions. Then I finally did it. I clicked on the Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing program’s button that sent my manuscript and cover to be published. And voila!

HARMFUL INTENT is a departure for me and a risk. Up until now I’ve been writing classic historical murder mysteries set in the 1940s. So, writing a contemporary whodunit is new ground for me. This one doesn’t skimp on suspense but is hilarious in parts. I’ve really upped the laugh factor. Heroine Veronica “Ronnie” Ingels has a quirky and often sardonic sense of humor. Things strike her funny bone at the oddest times. She also had a difficult childhood and self-depreciating and/or sarcastic humor has become a coping mechanism for her. As in my historical series, there’s no shortage of quirky secondary characters.

This is the first of the Veronica “Ronnie” Ingles/Dawson Hughes novels. Ronnie is the brash female Brooklyn private eye and Dawson is the gentlemanly Texas lawman. This is also the first novel in my “couples series.” Stories featuring three other couples as sleuths are in the works.
